Our Final Day @ Hands of Love Namaadi Campus

Thursday, June 8th

Our final day at the  Namaadi Campus was filled with teaching, house Mom pampering, sports, arts and crafts, a full day at the medical clinic, and of course, innumerable hugs and smiles. The second primary school welcomed us with more flowers, love, and a beautiful choir performance. Mr. Greene, Mr. Head, and Tayloe spent the day discussing leadership, purpose, and worth with the high school. Mrs. Dabney, Mrs. Anderson, Phoebe, Caroline, Sally, Anna Kate, Lainey, and Sarah Gordon helped the house moms make beds in the Primary Girl’s Dorm which sleeps 105 per room and each girl shares a twin sized mattress in the bunk beds. Susanne, the house mom, lives in the room and cares for all these girls 24/7. Then, they gave all the house moms (3 in total) and the three lovely cooks their first ever mani and pedi with hand, feet, and shoulder massages. They had never had anything like this done for them, and they 100% deserved it! They rarely take a day off in an entire year, and work tirelessly and joyfully throughout each day. Hayden, Woods, Hadley, Sally, and Jenna assisted Dr. Caprise treating sick students in the clinic. Maddie, Josh, Thomas, Chip, and Michael spent the day playing sports with the kindergartners. They also introduced bubbles to them for the first time, which was obviously a total hit! Mrs. Battle, Stella, Elizabeth, Aaron, Jimmy and Hadley did arts and crafts with a class of 7th graders and high schoolers. They painted nails and made bracelets in the morning and taught Vacation Bible School in the afternoon. The best part of all of these days has been the joy we receive from giving love to hundreds of beautiful children. Reflecting on these past two days, there is both abundant joy and sadness as we process the life-changing journey this has been thus far. Saying goodbye was had and beautiful at the same time.

Much Love,

Tayloe Hunter & Sarah Gordon Duerson

We Have Arrived in Uganda!

The team had a long but smooth journey with 18 hours in the air yesterday and today. We were graciously met by our first set of hosts, The Hands of Love International Staff and a few of their students. The Hands of Love students are particularly excited, as while there have been numerous groups of visitors to campus previously, we are the first team of high school students to ever work with them. After a two hour bus ride through Entebbe and Kampala, we checked into our Hotel in the northern part of the city. Some surprisingly nice showers, a bit of rest, a team meeting, and a great team dinner at the hotel were a great cap to the first day. Students shared about their first impressions and what they are thankful for in the first few days of the trip. It is a remarkably unified and thoughtful group of students and adults, and we can't wait to see what is in store in the coming days! Students will do many of the blog posts in the coming days, about their experien...

The Masai Mara

Sunday, June 18 th The Masai Mara We left the Anglican Mission House early Friday morning leaving Haynes’ funny jokes, Jevin’s love for American sports, and Mama B’s incredible cooking, but it was time for the Masai Mara and the lions were calling!   So we packed up the vans and were on our way.   We arrived at the Masai Mara around 4:30 pm and went straight to the park for our first game drive. You could say it was a successful night seeing four of the “Big Five” within 45 min…buffalo, lion, rhino, and elephant as well as about 8,000 zebras!   Finally, the night was topped off with an incredible dinner, and then straight to bed as we had an early wakeup call the next morning at 6:15 am for a 6:30 am game drive…so with sheets thrown back, feet hitting the ground, and a sweatshirt or extra layer pulled on to keep us warm in the early morning chill, out the door we went as the Masai Mara was waiting for us again. The morning game drive started off with th...

River Raftin' - Nile Style!

Saturday, June 10, 2017 River Raftin’- Nile Style! As the sun rises over the Nile, Mrs. Dabney touches her toes in yoga class, Smith and company take showers overlooking the longest river in the world, and Mr. Head joins the monkeys in a morning tree climb. Dr. Caprise takes his last sip of coffee with a native giraffe (Michael), and the team is ready to go.               After a short drive to the beginning of a 25km ride, the boys tie their headbands (recently bartered for 5,000 shillings) around their heads while the girls think of raft team names. The team applied extra sun screen and bug spray, and then entered the river. Unsure of what lies ahead, we ready ourselves for a bumpy ride. Notable wipe outs / events include Chip Bass tossed high in the air, Mrs. Anderson floating away downstream, the “Amazing Grace” boat with Sally and Hadley getting lodged on a rock before the waterfall, and Maddie and Ph...
