The Masai Mara

The Masai Mara

We left the Anglican Mission House early Friday morning leaving Haynes’ funny jokes, Jevin’s love for American sports, and Mama B’s incredible cooking, but it was time for the Masai Mara and the lions were calling!  So we packed up the vans and were on our way.  We arrived at the Masai Mara around 4:30 pm and went straight to the park for our first game drive. You could say it was a successful night seeing four of the “Big Five” within 45 min…buffalo, lion, rhino, and elephant as well as about 8,000 zebras!  Finally, the night was topped off with an incredible dinner, and then straight to bed as we had an early wakeup call the next morning at 6:15 am for a 6:30 am game drive…so with sheets thrown back, feet hitting the ground, and a sweatshirt or extra layer pulled on to keep us warm in the early morning chill, out the door we went as the Masai Mara was waiting for us again. The morning game drive started off with three mama lions on the on the hunt for some breakfast, but quickly moved on to a cheetah spotting a gazelle and then Greene’s favorite animal, a pumba (a.k.a warthog).  To finish off the morning, we drove over to the Mara River and found some crocs hanging around with the hippos.  After returning back to camp, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast of eggs and sausage with plenty of coffee and hot chocolate to go around.
The team enjoyed several hours of free time after breakfast, some taking naps, some going on a run, and others enjoying a massage that was described by one person as “the best $15 I’ve ever spent!”

The evening session was more of the many awesome animals we saw in the morning including a Staggers family of elephants (yes, that means eight elephants all together hanging out and enjoying life).

As several of us said, the first two game drives filled up our animal coffers…even the first game drive could have done that alone, but we went back for more with two more game drives, one on Saturday night and then an early morning Father’s Day that included two spectacular lion family sightings, a hippo roaming the land, and several pumba which made Greene feel even better!

We could go on even more about all the wonderful animals that God created for us and allowed us to enjoy over the past few days; however, we’ll let the storytelling from the Team fill in the gaps.

We’ll leave you with this thought…God’s creation is AWESOME and we think everyone enjoyed the entire weekend and a great conclusion activity for our trip.  As we packed up and prepared to head out Sunday after breakfast, it was clear the weekend was a huge success with many memories already being reminisced.

We Have Arrived in Uganda!

The team had a long but smooth journey with 18 hours in the air yesterday and today. We were graciously met by our first set of hosts, The Hands of Love International Staff and a few of their students. The Hands of Love students are particularly excited, as while there have been numerous groups of visitors to campus previously, we are the first team of high school students to ever work with them. After a two hour bus ride through Entebbe and Kampala, we checked into our Hotel in the northern part of the city. Some surprisingly nice showers, a bit of rest, a team meeting, and a great team dinner at the hotel were a great cap to the first day. Students shared about their first impressions and what they are thankful for in the first few days of the trip. It is a remarkably unified and thoughtful group of students and adults, and we can't wait to see what is in store in the coming days! Students will do many of the blog posts in the coming days, about their experien...

River Raftin' - Nile Style!

Saturday, June 10, 2017 River Raftin’- Nile Style! As the sun rises over the Nile, Mrs. Dabney touches her toes in yoga class, Smith and company take showers overlooking the longest river in the world, and Mr. Head joins the monkeys in a morning tree climb. Dr. Caprise takes his last sip of coffee with a native giraffe (Michael), and the team is ready to go.               After a short drive to the beginning of a 25km ride, the boys tie their headbands (recently bartered for 5,000 shillings) around their heads while the girls think of raft team names. The team applied extra sun screen and bug spray, and then entered the river. Unsure of what lies ahead, we ready ourselves for a bumpy ride. Notable wipe outs / events include Chip Bass tossed high in the air, Mrs. Anderson floating away downstream, the “Amazing Grace” boat with Sally and Hadley getting lodged on a rock before the waterfall, and Maddie and Ph...
